I consider Communication 100 as a serious subject in school because especially now, I am having 3 major subjects. And through this subject, I can learn a lot that can benefit me on my other subjects like Journalism 101 and Advertising 100.
There was an instance that my Professor in advertising 100 told us to explain the topics; media creates culture, media affects culture and media reflects culture. And this subject helped me a lot in answering the questions because we have taken those topics in advance.
I have learned a lot in this subject. The first thing that comes on my mind when I hear the word Communication 100 is how media becomes so powerful and how it influences the people. The best thing I have learned is that we can be active audiences and that we, media consumers, have the right to choose whether we would try to follow what media implies or tells us and whether we would have the ability to say “no” to media if we think that it would not benefit us. Another lesson that cannot escape my mind is the lesson on how media creates, affects and reflects culture. It can’t escape my mind because it was really the topic in this subject that I got hard up trying to find an example for “media affects culture.” Another thing is that we can now apply what we have learned in this subject in our other major subjects.
The reasons why I cited the lesson in audiences as being active and the lesson about media affects culture is that these are lessons that I can consider as very important and that I can consider as lessons that we, future media practitioners should try to pay attention to.
The media audiences, even though we can actually say are most likely to be passive, they can also be considered as active audiences because we try to be active in a way that we know how to distinguish what’s right and what’s wrong in media. This lesson about Uses and Gratification Theory made me realize that as a media practitioner one day, I should not tend to see my audience as passive because I have the responsibility to make my audience active media consumers.
“Media affects culture,” a statement that really got me nervous and made me look for examples that will justify my explanation. I had to think of a unique example for me to be able to explain what the topic is really all about. I learned that media really affects culture in away that we try to follow what it says and eventually, we don’t realize that it has began changing our culture.
Communication 100 has improved my perspective in mass media and mass communication because it taught me all the necessary things and topics about communication, about how media works, the audiences and the different organizations affiliated to it. It has improved my perspective in a way that I now see the importance of communication and the importance of different sectors in our society that makes media what it is today.
Furthermore, an area in Mass Communication I want to focus my studies on is the area on advertising. On how advertising can be of great help and of great benefit to the world of media. It can make the industry more prosperous in a way that it produces and makes quality advertisements. In this manner, the media would greatly benefit on it as well as the audiences and advertisers. In conclusion, this subject teaches all the necessary things we need to know about communication. It helps us to be a good communicator and it establishes our perspective about the world of mass communication. It is a subject that aims to develop our minds in a way that we see media not just a network company, a radio station and a publication. It teaches us the basic compositions and elements of media and how it influences the people. In addition, it does not just teach basic things about media but it gives us the idea that media is an important tool in the society that needs to be further learned and explained to the people especially students who will be future media practitioners.
